[Kurt arrived none too gently in the middle of the night, lying in front of the fountain. His head was dizzy, but when he finally came to, he realized people were walking by him without so much as looking at him, despite his current state. He realized it was night time, but he was still stunned that they didn't seem to notice him. It was only when he waved his own hand in front of his face and realized he could barely see it that he became suspicious. After moving into the light, it was almost as if he was not stepping from the shadows, but front a literal blanket of darkness. It was almost as if the darkness made him completely invisible.

After making his way to the roof, he realized that everything around him was so much clearer. It wasn't quite like daylight, but he could see even into the dark alleyways with almost perfect clarity. Whatever the Malnosso did to him, it was weird. He makes his way home that night, not realizing an even bigger surprise is waiting for him.]

[The next day when Kurt goes out, he does so with a pair of sunglasses on, in order to cover his now glowing eyes. He avoids the Brigade meeting on purpose (and will be doing so for awhile), instead settling for the mundane task of a quick trip to the grocery store. He's trying to avoid being spotted, so most of his travel will be done by roof top. For the sake of his friends though, he does leave a voice post. He's still wearing his sunglasses for that.]

Hey everyone, it's Kurt. Looks like I'm back. I'm just ahhh... a little under the weather, yeah? I'll be back to normal in no time.

[At least, he hopes he will.]

[Since he's expecting her, Kurt is the lucky one to open the door. He still has his sunglasses on, despite being indoors and it being relatively overcast outside.]

Hey Melanie. [Smile. He's happy to see her, but it's a little forced.]

[The sunglasses are pretty weird, but right now Melanie's just happy to see him. Actually, she's just going to go ahead and give him a big hug.]

It's great to have you back, Kurt.

[Oh, hey, surprise hug. But he's not complaining. It does force a bigger smile out of him.]

It's good to be back. [Mostly.]

[Friends that Melanie hasn't seen for a while get hugs. It's just how things go.

She lets go of Kurt and takes a moment to hand back the watch. The sunglasses are still weird, but she'll ask about those in a bit.]

Thanks again for letting me borrow this. It really helped me out.

[He takes the watch, a little eager to get to use it soon.]

I'm just glad it helped. So I guess that means you're back to normal, yeah? Real hair and everything?

Real as it's ever going to get. [No more scales, fangs, or anything like that. She's 100% human, now.]

I've got to ask, though, what's with the sunglasses? Can't see why you'd need them on a day like this. [Not to mention why he'd need them inside.]

[... yeah, he should have known she asked. He ends up looking away. After what she went through, it's selfish of him to keep it secret.]

It's because I'm hiding something.

Hiding something? [Not just something, he's hiding his eyes.]

Kurt, what did they do to you?

You won't like what you see.

[After a small sigh, he pulls off his shades. At first his eyes are closed until he turns to her, finally opening them.]

[Melanie is... surprised, to put it very lightly. She had expected different, but not this different. She isn't horrified, but it's definitely shocking.

Part of her wants to tell Kurt that it's just a change of eye colour and that it won't be so bad, but... she can't do that. It felt awful looking the way she did after she was returned, and if something had happened to make her look even less human? It would have been terrible, regardless of how seemingly small that change could have been.

Kurt has been like this his whole life. A change like this can't possibly be easy for him.]

I'm sorry.

[He's at least glad she didn't back away in horror or gasp. Maybe it's just the benefit of the light, but it helps that she's taking it as well as she is. Still, it doesn't change the fact of what he looks like.]

It might just be temporary... [But he doesn't sound like he believes it. He saw those mirrors. All those other Kurts... they had eyes like this.]

[It'll take more than just yellow eyes to genuinely scare Melanie.

... And no, it really doesn't sound like Kurt believes himself when he says that. Still, the least Melanie can do is try to be reassuring.]

These things are normally temporary, though, right? I'm sure things will go back to the way they were eventually. [And if they don't? Melanie will still stick with him. Different appearance or not, Kurt is still Kurt. It'd be an adjustment, sure, but it's not going to stop her from caring about him.]

[He just shakes his head. As much as he'd like to believe it...]

It might not be like that. I mean... sometimes for mutants, we don't just change the first time we gain our powers. Sometimes we keep changing. Maybe the Malnosso just made all of this happen earlier than it was supposed to.

[Slag. That isn't something she can argue with - she doesn't know enough about mutations or how they work to really try and counter that argument. Still, it's not as if she's just going to give up on trying to help or at least being comforting.

So, what the hell. She'll be bold and reach out to cup the side of his face with her hand.]

Well... Permanent or not, you're still you, right?

An freakier me, maybe. [He sighs, but he looks down at the watch.] At least I can hide it.

[Melanie isn't sure what to say in response to the hiding comment. It would be hypocritical for her to say he shouldn't use it when she was using it just weeks before, but she still can't help but think that he shouldn't need to hide himself. However, it isn't difficult to think of a response to that first thing.]

You're not a freak, Kurt.

Tell that to Bayville High.

[His response is a little more bitter than usual. It was something he'd been able to deal with before, but now it was all coming to the surface and this hurt. After messing with the watch he's pretty sure he's got his old image set up right. He slaps it on and turns it on. For a moment his eyes return to normal...]

[And then his image flickers and he's back to being the freaky Kurt.]

What!? Did it stop working?

[Melanie is about to say something about the people in Bayville High being a bunch of twips, but then the the image flickers and then Kurt is back to looking how he did before she gave the watch back. That... can't be good.]

Wait, maybe I could try to fix it. [While Kurt would obviously know how to program the watch to hold his own image, technology is a specialty of Melanie's. While she doesn't like the idea of Kurt feeling like he needs to hide himself, it's clear how important this is to him. Maybe she can figure out how to fix it. Hopefully.]

I hope so. [He'll hand it off to her. Unfortunately it's not the watch that's messed up, because the moment she's holding it, she's going to be the one looking like regular Kurt.]

Whoa... that's weird, now it's working.

[... And now she looks like Kurt. There's definitely something up.]

This doesn't make any sense. There's no reason for it to work for me and not you.

[He's bewildered at first. But besides the Malnosso just being jerkasses, he comes up with something of a theory.]

... or maybe it has to do with the other thing that happened to me. Holograms are just light, yeah? But now, whenever I'm in the shadows, it's like I just... disappear.

[That... actually sounds pretty cool, but that probably isn't what Kurt wants to hear right now.]

Yeah, I guess that would make sense. [That doesn't make it any better. She would fiddle with the watch, but... well, at this point it's pretty clear it won't do any good. She sighs and hands the watch back to Kurt.]

Sorry. [That he's stuck looking and feeling this way and that she can't actually help.]

I guess it's back to wearing the shades. [He sighs, but slips them back on.]

At least it's not that hard to hide. I mean... Scott manages to make it look cool, at least.

[You know what? Screw it. Melanie was hesitant before, but she's just not going to bother holding back. Does it make her a hypocrite? Yes, but it's never stopped her from speaking her mind before.]

... But you shouldn't have to hide it, Kurt. I know it can't be easy to have this happen, but constantly hiding isn't fair to yourself. I mean, what are you going to do if this is permanent? Just stick to wearing sunglasses for the rest of your life so nobody can see your eyes? [It doesn't sound very practical to her, really.]

Yes, your eyes are yellow now, but that doesn't make you some kind of monster - and neither does being blue, fuzzy, having a tail, or teleporting. [Sure it's easy to see why someone would look at him and think "monster", but that doesn't make it true, at least as far as she's concerned.]
