[Kurt is hanging out at the Battle Dome today. One nice thing about not having Wolverine around is that the programs he gets to pick aren't too hard and he gets to pick his own pace. But practice is still important, right? Besides, he gets to practice using the handy saber he picked up at the weapon shop. Sure, maybe it isn't practical to his typical training in subduing enemies with guns or mutant powers, but it's way more fun. But then, he'll probably never legitimately be fighting pirates on the high seas in epic sword duels. It's his guilty pleasure, okay? He likes to see imagine himself as a handsome, swashbuckling hero.

In between sessions, he decides to take a break, eat something from the vending machine and chat with people.]

People use the battle dome here a lot, right? Anyone have any favorite scenarios they like to fight in?

[Well huh. Not what he was expecting. Still, that's close enough, right?]

People see you like that. Doesn't that bother you?

It took some getting used to, yeah. But I get to go out there and do some good, you know? The package deal isn't so bad when you can do something with it.

Uhh... right. Yeah. [If only it was that simple.] But don't people, you know, call you freak? Or monster? [Or demon?]

[He lives with a demon. Does that count?]

Well...sure. Wouldn't you? But dude, I've put my neck on the line hundreds of times for everyone in my city. They'd have to be blind or stupid to think I'm out to get them after that.

Almost everyone on my team is pretty "out there", but nobody seems to mind when we go for pizza or hang out at the park. I guess we just sorta...earned it.

[Earned it. The professor always talks about things being like that. Like some day it will be that easy. People will just accept them for who they are and not fear them.]

That's.... great, man. You're really lucky.

...I guess you're right. I've never really thought about it before.

I'm, uh...not bothering you or anything, am I? [Old a tune as it is, he does still remember how it goes. He'll leave this guy alone if he's freaking him out.]

[Oh, whoops, he's totally giving off the wrong vibe here.]

What? Me? No no! It's uh, not like that, man! It's just... [This place is way too public.] Uh, follow me. [He heads towards one of the chambers.]

[Follow a random person he just met who may or may not think he's a monster into a chamber in a big, creepy dome?]

Uh...sure, dude. Right behind you. [Yes. Yes, because he is curious as hell.]

[Once they're inside, Kurt turns back to the green kid.]

The reason I'm not freaked out is because ah... well, this isn't what I really look like. [He reaches down for his watch... and shuts it off.]

[... and he seems to flicker, almost like a TV changing channels, before looking like this. Similar appearance, although more extreme. Blue fur. Crooked legs, a tail, and three digits on each hand and foot.]

This? This is the real me.

[Beast Boy watches with wide eyes - at first because of the flickering hologram, but then at Kurt when his true features replace human skin and bone structure.]

You're...

[And then he sobers up. His mouth draws into a line as he gives a slight little nod]

I see. I get it now.

[He considers turning it back on... but doesn't.]

This is what I've always looked like. I don't turn into animals, but... [He vanishes in a puff of smoke, reappearing behind Beast Boy.] I can do that.

[Beast Boy gives a small yelp and covers his face with his arms as he spins about. That was...unexpected, but a few seconds later he's grinning ear-to-ear.]

Hey, that's a pretty neat trick!

[He grins.]

Thanks. [But impressing him with tricks isn't why he dragged himself out here.] It comes in handy. Especially to make sure people don't see me like, well, me.

...So I take it people aren't really down with the "real" you, then.

People are so very much not down with the fuzzy one. [Hiw hometown? Tried to burn him at the stake.]

[...A holographic disguise. Something to hide everything that makes him different. Or Cyborg. Hell, maybe even Raven.]

[It would have made life so much easier, all that time ago.]

[Not anymore.] Maybe you just haven't found the right people. It took me forever, dude.

I've met the right people. They're great, really great. It's, well, everyone else. I guess it's different for you, since you're some kind of superhero. But people hate mutants, even the ones who look like everyone else.

[Then he doesn't get it. You have friends, you have powers. What's with that attitude?]

Really? Because I've been walking around outside here since day one, and the most I've gotten is a few weird looks. We come from different worlds or something, right? I'm sorry if the people back in yours are such jerks, but I don't think that's a problem here. Why not enjoy it while you can?

[He knows the green kid's right. He's been told that already. He's told himself that too.]

I've always been like this. When the professor gave me this watch... it was the first time I could go anywhere and people not notice me. Maybe people won't try to attack me or insult me here, but I'd still be the blue guy that stands out, you know?

And why is that such a bad thing? Dude - you're different. Wearing that little holo-thingy is fine and all if it keeps you safe, but it doesn't make you like everyone else.

Is it really so important that you feel like you do that you'll miss out on this chance?

[He really doesn't have a handy excuse for that. Aside from the fact he doesn't want to be different. But in the end, the holo watch doesn't make him like everyone else. He can't even hold a person's hand without them figuring out his secret.

He sighs.] Maybe you're right. But if I stop wearing the watch, I'm going to have so much explaining to do. [And no girl will ever react to his flirting the same way again.]

Come on, dude, how hard can it be? Everyone loves the color blue! [He may be downgrading the entire situation. And hey, he totally had a girlfriend once...never mind how that relationship ended.]
