Zwölf - [Voice/Action]

[Kurt has some messages he needs to leave. None of them have to do with that Brigade business, because he's not really apologetic about people not liking his and Mikage's prank. Nor is he eager to fess up being in a girl's body anyway. However he does need to pass on some news about one of his team mates...]

I guess it's pretty obvious by now, but if anyone didn't know, Kitty's back home now. Which isn't fair, because I was totally here before she was! Pretty lame, yeah?

[It's obvious this happened long enough ago that it doesn't bother Kurt now. It doesn't hurt that going home is a GOOD thing and he's just disappointed she got to go home before him. After all, he changes the subject almost immediately. He's doing this mostly because of Anne and partly because Rogue endorsed it in her own way.]

So... does anyone here like acting? Back in Bayville, I was in a drama club, which was pretty cool. Anyone else into that kind of thing?

[Outside of that, Kurt is in his usual haunts. At home playing video games, hanging around on whatever roof he feels like being on, or DEFENDING THE ALAMO in the Battle Dome. Disturb as you will. If you're just doing something interesting out in the open, he may disturb you against your will.]

[He's tempted to let the matter drop. On the other hand, what would Scott say right now? He certainly wouldn't just drop it. Besides, he isn't asking her about some jerk at school. This is one of Magneto's men, even if they aren't working together now.

So he crosses his arms and assumes the kind of expectant look Scott would have in this kind of situation.]

It's an X-Men issue.

[Oh Kurt. You're even less Scott than she is. She holds your gaze, almost amused that you think that you can pull the loyalty card and get her to talk about something she doesn't want to talk about.

...okay, so maybe the loyalty card is a very, very good card.

She stays silent, though, because this isn't a time of her life that talking about with Kurt of all people can go anywhere good.

-'So remember after I threw our mom off the cliff? Right after unleashing Apocalypse? And I was kind of upset and everyone at the Institute was treating me like I'd gone evil or insane or that I was made of glass, and you - you weren't talking to me at all? Gambit was watching the whole time.'-

Yeah. No. But at the same time Rogue realizes that if she doesn't give Kurt something, he'll probably try to get it out of Gambit. And she can only imagine how well that conversation will go. So after the silence between them has gotten nice and thick and made her point that - yeah, she's only talking about this because she chooses to, Rogue tones down her not-quite-glare.]

He didn't take me because I was an X-Man, or because of Magneto, or anything like that. He needed my help. [Pause. A beat of painful clarification, because she's not so sure how true that other sentence was, but she knows this is true:] He needed my powers.

[Man, he was starting to think this wasn't going to work. He was wondering maybe if the glowy eyes trick would help make him look more intimidating... or just frightening. Fortunately the 'he needed my powers' line quells his suspicion. It also lowers his opinion of Gambit quite a bit. He knows good and well how Rogue feels about that.]

I see.... would he do it again?

[Would he? Rogue... doesn't know. She'd like to say that she doesn't think so, but...]

He had a good reason.

[There is a distinct hint of 'So it's all right because apparently I'm a slot machine and all that I'm good for is 'insert coin, get power use of choice' in her tone there.

...Did she want to say this? No, not at all.]

He needed me to help save his father. His adopted father.

[That's right, Kurt. Gambit the evil kidnapping Acolyte was more willing to help his bastard father than your sister the X-Man was to save your mother. And she knows this is exactly what you'll think, because she can't think anything else when it comes to herself. She hates what she did... and wishes she could say she would have done things differently, now.]

[The thought does occur to him and he slouches back in his chair miserably. This was making him think of things he'd tried to forget about in Luceti. He doesn't know what Gambit's situation with his father is like. For all he knows, the adopted father could be as great as Kurt's own adopted dad. In the end, he decides not to focus on that. His response is delayed as he decides what he needs to say.]

There's never a good reason to kidnap someone.

[She slumps a little in the silence. Yup, this is why she didn't want to talk about this with you, reason number 3.a. Something like challenge sparks in her gaze at that - because yes, duh, Kurt, but aren't you listening to what she's saying?]

I ain't saying that what he did was right. But at least he didn't manipulate me into lettin' him spy my friend or brainwash me into unleashin' the Apocalypse. I'll take what I can get.

[Since this is all I am, and all I'm good for.]

[Ouch, Rogue. Ouch. He knows good and well that Mystique isn't a saint. He wouldn't defend her actions or even as a person. He's not even sure why she's trying to bring her up in all of this and it's starting to annoy him.]

This isn't about her or whether Gambit is worse than she is, Rogue. Our mother isn't here. [Or anywhere.] He is.

[She wasn't trying to throw stones, Kurt - she was explaining her perspective. She gives him a look that's a bit 'Ugh, why do I bother' and 'You asked for this, don't blame me if you don't like the answers.'

But enough pointless self-disclosure. Though pain has tightened the corners of her eyes at Kurt's 'our mother,' she just - sighs and appears to disengage.]

I know. All I'm sayin' is - I don't think he's a bad person. I know he's done a lot of bad things but I know evil. He's no Sabertooth. [Or Mystique.] I wouldn't trust him as far as I can throw him, but we don't have to worry about him tearin' up the streets of Luceti.

Yeah, I guess so.

[Something about this all doesn't feel right to him, but he's not sure what else he's going to be able to get. He suspects something more went on when she was kidnapped. She wasn't exactly defending Gambit, but she was being more amicable than seemed right. But it's not like there was anything he could do about that.]

[His actions were lousy, but he gave her a chance to make a choice - to help someone do what she should have done once before. As far as Rogue goes, being an extremely private person, she thinks she's explained things more than sufficiently.

Because she knows what it's like to be desperate and make bad choices, even if you won't like yourself very much afterwards.]

If he steps outta line, we'll deal with it then. [...] Until then, it wouldn't hurt ta share our resources. He's a powerful mutant an' a smart planner - might be good to have on our side if things get crazy around here.

[Crazy like drafts and Malnosso.]

[Well, this isn't exactly a bad idea. He's not exactly sold in it, but it's certainly logical. His gut instinct tells him that no good will come of it, but it's not like that's always been right.]

Exactly what resources are you talking about?

Right now just information. An'... not trying to kill each other when we meet on the street. I'm not saying we forget like any of this ever happened, but just... wait and see.

[Okay, that is completely reasonable. Time to force things to be lightened up, so he grins.]

Just as long as he's not getting an empty room here, I'm good with that.

[Rogue recoils.]

I'd sooner bunk with Duncan!

... I heard he didn't get his football scholarship.

[What? It's conversational.]

[...well, that's a stunning change of subject. She blinks a bit and then takes a sip of tea before pronouncing dourly:]

[That's an expression he hasn't heard before. It's clear enough, though.]

Hey, just saying. [He leans forward to drain his glass.]

You told Miss O yet?

[She glances down at her now cool tea cup and makes a displeased face. Lukewarm tea. Bleck.]

I was gonna tell her in the mornin'. She came with you when y'all came to get me. [Sigh] This would be so much easier if everyone was from the same time.

[...an out loud mope with no tinge of sarcasm? She must be tired.]

Yeah, definitely.

[Then something occurs to him, because this is probably important.]

When is he from? [All Kurt knows is it's around or after his own time.]

[Rogue waves one hand in distracted exasperation.

"You didn't forget so soon, did you, Rogue?"

Hmph. Bastard.]

Same time as me - give or take a few days.

[So he remembers the kidnapping too. What a douche.]

So he already knows about everything.

[A Rogue on top of her game, not tired and worn out by nightmares and interrogation, would just flicker a glance at Kurt that says 'Duh.' But casual conversation can slip up on her - and before she remembers that she's not supposed to be comfortable ever, sometimes Rogue will give away more than she wants to.

Now is one of those times.]

Not like that's anything new.

[He'd known exactly how to play her, after all.

Heh - how much time and trouble would she have saved herself if she'd touched him then and there? But she'd wanted... to believe him. What a load of crap.]

[Kurt is clearly unaware of just how much of a mastermind Gambit can actually be. In fact, it's clear she knows a lot more about him than anyone else currently does. And even if he's not currently an enemy...]

Just how good is he? I mean, I know he's pretty good with that staff and he can light things up, but.... [Cool mutant powers aren't everything.]

[She shakes her head a little and corrects him.] Kinetic energy. He can take all the potential energy of an object an' speed it up - and you'd be surprised how much boom can be in a playin' card.

[Let alone something bigger - like a train.]

[He didn't really need correcting. He's allowed to make light of people's powers!]

We've all got a first hand demonstration of that, yeah? I was talking about other stuff. He did work for Magneto, after all.
