[With his first week of school in Luceti over, Kurt has taken advantage of the day off to make something a little special. A pizza, in fact. It's for a special little friend he made, so given how ridiculous this is, he's done his best to make the pizza when Kitty wasn't at home to call him out for it. Once it's done, he'll be appearing (quite literally) at building 4, teleporting to the sixth floor to knock on the door of Maes Hughes. Hopefully your daughter warned you that she ordered a pizza for lunch.

After putting up with Brigade shenanigans and generally hanging around the plaza area, he'll even make a voice post. Crazy, innit? This is mostly in response to seeing a certain person claiming to be a demon. Something that... struck him rather odd.]

When you think of a demon, what exactly do they look like in your mind? And [a hesitant pause here] what would you do if you saw one like that?

[LATER after being bombarded with how cool demons are, Kurt says something over the journals that will elicit less freaky responses:]

School wasn't so bad here. I can't believe we actually get homework though. What happens if we fail?

Really? Wow. [She... can't quite wrap her mind around that. So she just shrugs.] If we stopped working for a day, we wouldn't have food the next. But that sounds nice. What did you do with all that free time?

[Oh there you go again, Katara, making him feel small about his own life.]

A lot of times? Homework. But just enjoying ourselves, mostly. Catching up with friends, writing to my family at home, that sort of thing.

[It's not everyone who grows up in the SOUTH POLE, man. Suck it up. She grins at him.]

That sounds like fun. There are a lot of people from worlds like that here, I think. I was talking to a girl the other day who said that she got to go to school and just be a student. I thought that was pretty amazing.

[He... doesn't see what's so amazing about that. At all.]

Didn't you go to school too?

[She shakes her head, moving to take a seat beside him.] No, my Gran Gran taught us what we needed to know - how to read and write, basic math and mapmaking, the history of our Tribe...

Honestly, before we came to Luceti, I'd never been around so many people my own age. [There was the North Pole, but she'd been so busy kicking the asses of the boys she met there that she hadn't... really... befriended them. Luceti's a little intimidating because of that, to be honest. When she lets herself think about it.]

[He can actually understand that. Before he moved to the Institute, all of his schooling was through his parents. He can hardly fault her for that, because as far as his parents went, they were excellent teachers.

Instead, he settles on the part about people her age.] Oh yeah? [Coyly:] Does that mean you don't have a boyfriend waiting back home for you?

[Katara does a double-take at that question, clearly expecting him to comment on the lovely purple grass before saying anything like that.] What? No! Nothing like that.

[And she blushes.]

[He ends up laughing at her reaction. Not a mean one, just him being amused at her reaction.]

No? What about here?

No! [She is still blushing and crosses her arms in a fit of hmph.

Because - what is this?

No, seriously. WHAT. Who asks these kinds of things? Especially to her!]

There's no one like that here. [The blush, it does not fade, because there is a niggling awareness in the back of her mind about the two newest arrivals from her world.]

[He just shakes his head, still amused. At least he's not laughing now. He should probably cut her some slack, given how indignant she is, but he can't resist.]

Wow, I'm surprised.

Why do you say that?

[He gives a shrug.]

It's just my experience that usually all the pretty girls are already taken.

[...this is so out of Katara's experience, she doesn't know what to say or do. In fact, she probably stares at him like an idiot for a minute. People don't just - say that! And 'taken?' What is this? With the 'pretty' and - what?

Eventually, Katara will shake her head.]

Thanks for the compliment. But it's not that way here. I don't know that many people who are in those kinds of relationships in Luceti. It's... hard. To realize that you could be with someone one day, and the next they could disappear, forget all about you back in their own world.

[Wow Katara. You really are bad at this. He manages to hide a smile at her reaction. Well, he tries anyway. It's a heavy subject and he addresses it at seriously as he can.]

Ah, well. That would be hard, yeah. But you know, is that so different from life back home? Maybe it happens here more often, but... you lose people all the time. They move on, they pass away, or many other things. It doesn't make the time you had any less special.

[Aaaand then he moves on to make it lighter.] Besides, dating doesn't mean marriage! No one says you have to fall in love and have kids with the first boy you date.

[Bad at what - trying to make it clear that she's not interested in any sort of relationship right now without out and out saying she's not interested in one with YOU? Or bad at taking a compliment about this whole topic. Get back in the friend-zone where you belong, attractive male of her age-range! Clinging on to the threads that make this a normal conversation, DESPITE ALL OTHER SIGNS TO THE CONTRARY, Katara makes a face.]

Bleck. I'd hope not. [Because that kindasortamaybe mighthavebeen Jet. And. No. Then she shrugs and smiles.] Besides, I've got a whole year before I have to worry about marriage.

[Consider him properly distracted by that last statement there.]

Wait, wait. What do you mean one year? [Looking her over now.] How old are you?

[Hahahaha, victory!]

I turned fifteen here a few months ago. Sokka figured it out. I wasn't keeping track of the time. [She shrugs, smiling.] Fortunately that just means that I can, not that I have to, unlike the Northern Watertribe. It's not that I don't want to get married someday, I do! But I just don't think I'm ready for it right now.

Married at sixteen? Isn't that a little early? [The fact she's even thinking about it seriously is... well, surprising.]

I think so too, but it's pretty normal back home. What's the normal marrying age in your world?

Where I live now, you're not an adult until you're eighteen. I still have a year to go for that.

Oh. That's pretty different. I guess that explains why you have so much time for dating.

[A nod.] And even then, a lot of people won't get married until their mid-twenties. Or even later!

Huh. [And what do you know. Another aspect of his culture that she can't quite understand.] So what about you? Are you dating anyone back home?
